Make lemonade! That was Jill Swanson Peltier's motto as she underwent the most difficult journey of her life back in 2014: A devastating colon cancer diagnosis and strenuous chemotherapy treatment. Despite her sour circumstances, she continued to run her automotive racing business and keep up with the demands of being a mom, stepmom, and wife. One day, a friend gave her a small parcel filled with necessities to make it through a day of chemotherapy, and it was such a lovely gift that she decided to create her own version of the goodie bag for fellow patients undergoing treatment with her. Over time, her "lemonade" project became a beacon of comfort for many patients undergoing chemotherapy well after her treatment ended, ultimately leading to the creation of her charity organization, Lemons of Love.
Fast forward to 2018. The Leica Biosystems Social Impact team learned about the Lemons of Love organization and decided to bring Jill and her team to the Buffalo Grove site for a special packing event! LBS associates gathered on November 12th to hear Jill's story and assemble 100 care packages for Condell Hospital in Libertyville, IL . Donning "We 'Leica' Lemons of Love" t-shirts, associates packed 1-2 boxes containing:
- Facial Tissues
- Organic Hand Lotion
- Lemon Drops
- Ginger Tea
- A Port Pillow (to take the pressure off of the patient's chest port while wearing a seatbelt)
- A happy picture from a child
- A coloring book and pencils
- A Lemons of Love branded water bottle and bracelet
- A special signed note from the LBS associate
Special thanks to all associates who participated in the event, and Evelyn Roberts for making 100 port pillows!
